@yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball opens play at Susquehanna Tournament

York College will take on Pennsylvania College of Technology Sunday (Nov. 24) in the consolation game of the Susquehanna University Trailways Tournament


SELINSGROVE, PA --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball opened play Saturday evening at the Susquehanna University Trailways Tournament with a 76-49 setback against the host River Hawks (2-1) from Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.

Mac-Dege Dessources put York on the board 57 seconds in with a jumper to make it a 5-2 game.  Following a jumper by Dessources 4:56 later, Susquehanna scored five-straight points to extend its lead to nine (16-7) with 4:35 left.  Kristina Sierra sank her second triple of the quarter to help York score eight of the game's next 13 points to trail 21-16 heading into the second period.  Destiny Drummond's jumper with 2:48 showing on the second-half clock pulled the Cardinals within four before the River Hawks outscored York by three (9-6) in the final 1:33 to lead 35-26 at intermission. 

York got as close as seven in the third quarter as Susquehanna pulled away with a 17-5 run to lead by 19 (58-39) at the end of the third period.  The River Hawks played with a double-digit lead for the final 16:34 and extended its advantage to a game-high 29 points (76-47) with 1:28 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.

Dessources registered 15 points (7-of-8 FG), 17 rebounds and two blocks to post her 14th-career double-double. Sierra and Ellma Hodzic each chipped in with eight points while Daniesha Newsome followed with seven off the bench. 

Erin McQuillen and Nevin Hoenninger led Suquehanna with 15 and 14 points, respectively.  

York shot 27 percent from the field (17-of-63), 21.1 percent from three-point range (4-of-19) and 61.1 percent from the free-throw line (11-of-18) compared to Susquehanna connecting on 39.7 percent from the floor (29-of-73), 27.3 percent from long distance (6-of-22) and 60 percent from the stripe (12-of-20).  The River Hawks edged York in rebounds, 51-49, as both teams grabbed 17 offensive boards to score 11 second-chance points. York finished with a 2-1 margin in blocks while Susquehanna held the advantage in assists (17-5), steals (11-5) and scored 18 points off 25 Cardinal miscues.

The Cardinals (0-2) return to action Sunday (Nov. 24) at 1 p.m. in the Susquehanna University Trailways Tournament consolation game against the Pennsylvania College of Technology Wildcats (0-3) inside Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium.
