NEW YORKÂ --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's and women's swimming combined to win four events and generated first-place points in two other races Friday evening to open the 2019-20 season with a CUNYAC road matchup against the Baruch College Bearcats from ARC Arena Pool. The Cardinals also added first-place points in two events but were outscored 123-55 in the men's race while falling 109-58 on the women's side.
"I am proud of our swimmers for tonight's performance," said York head coach
Samantha Oyola. "We still have work to do, but it was a great start to the season."
Leading the way for the Cardinal men was
Alex Winter, who debuted with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke in a margin of 11.55 to touch the wall in 1:16.13. He also raced past Baruch to win the 800-meter freestyle (10:47.09) 43.29 ahead of the second place finisher.
Arafath Hussain clocked a 30.79 to take second place in the 50-meter freestyle race.Â
Anthony Nazario, Jr. rounded out York's individual accolades with first-place points in the 400-meter freestyle (7:51.10).Â
Ti'Juan Boothe,
Anthony Jordan,
Jaquan Eleazard and Winter teamed up to finish third (1st place points) in the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:09.33.
In the women's meet,
Che'Rel Haywood and
Mauricia Blake also made splashes in their debuts by claiming victory in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:30.48) and 100-meter freestyle (1:23.48), respectively. Haywood registered a second-place time of 2:56.94 in the 200-meter IM and Blake collected second-place points in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:57.35).
Kaithlyn Taylor also contributed a third-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle race in 4:04.62 to go with first-place points in the 400-meter freestyle (8:13.65).
Mary Cuevas,
Madonna Adieb,
Zariah Nelson and
Anita Okoye were awarded first-place points in the 200-meter freestyle with a combined time of 4:20.70.
The Cardinals (M: 0-1 / W: 0-1) remain on the road next Friday (Nov. 8) to take on the College of Staten Island Dolphins (M: 1-0 / W: 1-0) at 5 p.m. inside CSI Sports & Recreation Center Pool in Staten Island.
