York College men's basketball opened a two-game CUNYAC homestand Monday evening with an 84-46 setback to the Baruch College Bearcats (11-3, 6-0 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.
The Cardinals (5-9, 1-5 CUNYAC) started slow and hit just 1-of-11 from the field to find themselves in a 21-2 hole with 12:24 remaining in the opening half.
Darin Dove stuck a jumper 13 seconds later to spark York's 7-0 spurt capped by
Devante McGhee's three-pointer to slice the deficit to 12 (21-9). McGhee stroked another three-pointer at the 6:19 mark and
Amaninder Pawar sank a free throw to make it a 33-17 game. Baruch then outscored York 14-5 over the final 4:44 to lead by 25 (47-22) at the break.
York would get as close as 28 points in the second half as the Bearcats played with a 30-point lead for the final 15:54. Baruch scored six-unanswered points to close the night with a game-high 38-point lead.
McGhee scored a personal-best 10 points (4-of-9 FG) while logging a career-high 24 minutes.
Stephan Cadet followed with nine points (3-of-3 FG, 3-of-3 FT) in 14 minutes while
Devine Chisholm directed the Cardinal offense with a career-high five assists.
Akil Vaughn registered nine points and two blocks to anchor York down low.
William Sixsmith led all scorers with 15 points (5-of-10 3FG) to pace four other Bearcats in double-figures. Jack Sixsmith dished out a game-high eight helpers and Nathaniel Ormond made the most of 11 minutes off the bench by producing 10 points (4-of-6 FG) and 12 rebounds (six offensive).
York struggled shooting the ball throughout the game and finished at 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three-point territory and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free-throw line. Baruch fired away at a rate of 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from beyond the arc, 49.3 percent (33-of-67) from the floor and 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the stripe. The Cardinals converted 18 Bearcat turnovers into 18 points and held a 5-2 advantage in blocks.
The Cardinals is back in action Wednesday (Jan. 9) at home with a CUNYAC matchup against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (7-6, 2-3 CUNYAC) at 7:30 p.m. in Jamaica, New York.
