Men’s Soccer Victorious in Home Opener Over Sarah Lawrence

Rohan Burrell Junior delivered the game-winning goal in the 59th minute in the 1-0 win.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Senior Rohan Burrell Junior (Jamaica, NY, St. Jago HS, Jamaica) delivered the game-winning goal in the 59th minute to lift the York College (NY) men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Sarah Lawrence College in their season and home opener on Monday evening at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

With the victory, York (1-0) wins their season opener for the second straight season and snaps a two-game skid against Sarah Lawrence (0-2).

The scoreless opening 45 minutes saw few scoring opportunities as both teams had just two shots apiece with both netminders stopping all but one shot that came on target.

The opening 14 minutes of the second stanza played similar to the first half before forward Burrell Junior took a long pass from the midfield and dribbled past the defense and fired the ball from inside the top of the box for the game's only tally.

The Cardinal defense helped preserve the victory as the Gryphons pressed forward to find an equalizer and outshot the red and white 6-1 over the final 30 minutes. With five minutes remaining, a York foul just outside their box gave the Gryphons a dangerous scoring opportunity but Dominic Edwards's direct free kick attempt sailed just over the crossbar.

For the contest, the Gryphons held an 8-6 shot advantage and 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Johan Bermeo (Jamaica, NY, Queens Vocational HS) made three saves to record his first career shutout and the first clean sheet since last season's 2-0 victory over the College of New Rochelle.

York returns to the field heading to Throggs Neck, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup against Maritime College on Wednesday, September 5, starting at 7 p.m.
