NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College softball team could not get much going on a cold afternoon at Randall's Island on Tuesday and lost to John Jay College by scores of 17-1 and 12-1.
Things started off well enough for York in game one as
Nicole Ovelheira singled and
Nathy Reyes scored after the center fielder misplayed the ball. York took a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.
But it didn't take long for John Jay College to answer back. The Bloodhounds put up crooked numbers in every frame, scoring two in the first, five in the second, seven in the third and three in the fourth. They collected 11 hits and were aided by five York errors.
Jessica Barbaria, Lisa Pelligrino and Mariela Guzman each collected three hits apiece to lead the Bloodhounds.
Ovelheira added two more hits and ranks third in the CUNYAC with a .472 batting average.
Game two played out in a similar fashion. John Jay pounded out 13 hits in just four innings and plated 12 runs. An eight-spot in the bottom of the first would put the game well out of reach.
York was able to push across a run in the top of the third when
Dorianny Rojas singled, stole second and came around to score on a fielder's choice.
York falls to 1-14, 0-10 CUNYAC and John Jay improves to 6-16, 3-1 CUNYAC. York will have a quick turnaround when they visit Old Westbury at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
