JAMAICA, N.Y.- The York College men's basketball team earned a hard-fought win on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals took down the University of Marywood, 58-55, as part of the CUNY/ CSAC Challenge
York (6-16) picked up the win with solid contributions throughout the lineup. Three players notched 10 points, including
Jonathan Jones, who also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Edwin Sainvil dished out five assists and grabbed three steals in addition to his 10 points.
Shaheim Greene scored 10 points, while shooting 60% from the field and also grabbing seven rebounds off the bench.
Â
Marywood University (11-10) was led by Jeremy Ringland, who notched a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Thomas Swartz led the team in scoring, dropping in 18 points.
Â
The game wasn't as close in the first half as it would be in the second half. The Cardinals went on a 14-2 run to end the half, fueled by six points from
Shaheim Greene. York went into the half up by a score of 35-22, led by eight points from
Edwin Sainvil.
Â
York stretched its lead to 14 early in the second half after a jumper from
Stephan Cadet. A thunderous dunk from Marywood University's Jeremy Ringland sparked the Pacers onto a 13-5 run which put the team down four. From there it would be back and forth, resulting in a two-point lead for York with 35 seconds left in the second half.
Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins went to the line with 18 seconds to shoot two, he made the first and missed the second leaving the door open for Marywood University. As the Pacers raced up the court after the miss, York played stellar defense forcing the Pacers to take their final timeout with two seconds left. The proceeding inbounds play resulted in a three pointer that didn't draw iron and the Cardinals crept away with a victory.
The CUNY/ CSAC (Colonial States Athletc Conference) is a new initiative this year where each CUNY school plays against a school from the CSAC on the same day.
Â
York will look to put out another strong effort on Tuesday night when they travel to the City College of New York.
