NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking, double overtime loss to the City College of New York, 87-83, on the road Tuesday night.
York made game-tying shots at the end of regulation and in the first overtime, but they came up short in the second overtime.
In addition, York held a 17-point first-half advantage but saw it dwindle away as the game went on. A 12-4 run for CCNY before the half helped close the deficit to just five points (39-34) and gave the Beavers some momentum going into the locker room.
York still maintained a small lead through most of the second half, but a three-pointer by CCNY's Austin Volkens put the Beavers up by two points with 47 seconds to go. However, York's
Shaheim Greene made a lay-up with 21 seconds left to tie the game and the Cardinals then got a defensive stop to force overtime.
In the first OT, York was once again down two points in the final seconds. This time,
Maliqe John made the big shot to tie the score with just ten seconds remaining. Once again, York got a defensive stop and the game went into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, the game was tied when CCNY was fouled with just 12 seconds remaining. Darden Lahu made both free throws to put his team ahead. York then missed a jumper with four seconds left that would have tied the game. CCNY got the rebound and made two more free throws to ice the game.
In the loss, freshman
Stephan Cadet scored a career-high 19 points on 9-of-18 shooting with seven rebounds.
Maliqe John established new career highs in points (18), rebounds (8) and assists (5).
Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins finished with 17 points, five boards and three assists and
Edwin Sainvil scored 13 points and had two assists.
CCNY got 21 points from Salvator Palazzolo and 14 points and 11 boards from Dardan Lahu. CCNY (2-21, 2-12) has earned both its wins this season against the Cardinals.
