WILKES BARRE, P.A.—The York College men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches held at Wilkes University on Wednesday. York fell to Misericordia University, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-12) and then lost to Wilkes, 3-0 (25-8, 25-20, 29-27).
Against Misericordia (6-7), the Cardinals couldn't do much to stop the Cougars. Misericordia recorded 38 kills in the three-set match including 16 alone in the first set.
The Cardinals did keep it close in the second set, but a 5-0 run by Misericordia helped to break an 11-11 tie and propelled the Cougars to a 2-0 set lead. They had no trouble in the third set and got the sweep.
In the loss, York did play well at the net again, picking up five blocks compared to just one for the Cougars.
Mambe Koureissi had three block assists.
The Cardinals played a tighter match against Wilkes (4-11), but still came out on the short end.
After losing badly in the first set, York fought hard in the final two sets. York trailed 21-14 in the second set, but battled back to make it close before ultimately losing, 25-20.
In the final set, York had two set points, but each time Wilkes fought it off. Wilkes would finally finish off the match with three straight points.
Akil Vaughn led York with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage.
Kevin Campbell and
Juan Rodriguez each had seven assists.
With the losses, York is now 1-5. They will visit Cairn University for at tri-match with Cairn and Kean University on Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
