York College women's basketball scored three players in double-digits Sunday afternoon at home in a 95-60 non-conference setback against the Stockton University Ospreys (3-8) inside York College Gymnasium. The two teams met for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign.
The Cardinals (2-9) opened the game with a 10-point deficit until
Mac-Dege Dessources dropped in a layup at the 5:40 mark to put York on the board. Dessources' field goal helped York score five of the game's next eight points to trail 13-5 with 4:13 left in the first quarter. Stockton scored four-unanswered points in the final 49 seconds to lead 24-11 at the end of opening stanza. The Ospreys went on a 15-0 scoring spree to start the second period to stretch their lead to 28 (39-11) with 5:04 remaining in the half. York answered with a 9-1 run over the next 2:45 capped by
Dayana Jacome's three pointer to pull within 21 (41-20). Stockton used a 10-3 spurt over the final 2:07 to lead 51-23 at intermission.
Down by 28 at the break, York closed the gap to 26 with 6:02 showing on the third-quarter clock before Stockton played with a 30-point lead for the remaining 12:26. The Cardinals were outscored by three (20-17) in the final period as the Ospreys opened a game-high 37-point lead with 1:18 remaining.
Fatomata Trawalleh scored 11 of her career-high 14 points in the second half and finished the day making a personal-best 11-of-16 from the free-throw line to lead York. Dessources, the nation's leading rebounder (17.2 per game), combined 10 points (5-of-9 FG) and 15 rebounds (six offensive) to post her team-leading seventh double-double of the season.
Ellma Hodzic matched a career high with six assists and added 10 points, six rebounds and two steals to her statline.
Stockton was led by April Peterson, who poured in a game-high 17 points (6-of-6 FG, 5-of-6 FT) and grabbed nine rebounds. Mckenna Forry and Lajerah Wright both scored 15 points while Madison Noordeloos added 14 off the bench.
York made a season-high 21-of-36 attempts from the free-throw line and shot 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the field and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three-point territory. Stockton hit 51.4 percent (36-of-70) from the floor, 25 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc and 74.1 percent from the charity stripe. Both teams drew even with 38 rebounds as York scored seven second-chance points off 13 offensive boards. The Ospreys finished with the advantage in steals (21-5), blocks (4-1), assists (23-15), points in the paint (54-20), second-chance points (15-7) and fast break scoring (18-2) while converting 36 Cardinal turnovers into 31 points.
The Cardinals (1-2 CUNYAC) open the 2019 calendar year next Thursday (Jan. 3) with a CUNYAC road matchup against the College of Staten Island Dolphins (9-3, 3-0 CUNYAC) at 5:30 p.m.
