Tough Start to the New Year for Women's Basketball

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The York College women's basketball team had no answer for the College of Staten Island on Thursday night, losing by a score of 74-46 on the road.

After four minutes of even play, the Cardinals let the game get away early on, committing several turnovers, which allowed the Dolphins to close the first quarter leading 19-10. The Dolphins continued to extend their lead in the second quarter, leading by 20 points at halftime.

York made a run for a comeback towards the end of the third by outscoring CSI 16-12 in the quarter, but Cristine Camerlengo knocked a timely 3-pointer to close out the quarter to keep York down by 16 heading in the fourth quarter. Staten Island held a 26-14 edge in the fourth quarter to close out the game.

Despite the loss, Mac-Dege Dessources leads the nation in rebounds per game (17.4) for the Cardinals. Dessources pulled down a game-high 24 rebounds, eight of which were offensive. The stand out player for CSI was Megan McEwan with 21 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

The Cardinals out rebounded the Dolphins 55-37; however, it was the turnover battle that contributed to the loss.

The Dolphins improved 10-3 overall and 4-0 in CUNYAC, while the Cardinals dropped to 2-10, 1-3 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will visit City College of New York on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
