JAMAICA, NY --- York College women's basketball improved their home record to 2-0 on the season with Thursday's 76-68 non-conference win against the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (1-9) inside York College Gymnasium. The triumph improves the Cardinals (2-7) to 3-1 against New Rochelle since the 2015-16 season.
Trailing 21-16 at the end of the first period, York's bench scored 11 of the team's 18 second-quarter points to send a 34-all game into intermission. New Rochelle led by as many as 10 points (26-16) with 6:08 left in the half before Kristin Sierra drained a pair of triples to spark York during an 18-8 scoring spree over the final 5:08.
The Cardinals won the game with a solid second half that saw them shoot 43.2 percent (16-of-37) from the floor to outscore New Rochelle by eight (42-34) in the final 20 minutes. Sheahna Roshcer dropped in a layup just 23 seconds into second-half play for a 36-34 Cardinal advantage as York played for the final 19:37. Leading 56-47 after three quarters,
Fatomata Trawalleh's layup built York's lead to 10 (60-50) with 7:51 showing on the fourth-quarter clock. Trawalleh's would then cap an 8-2 run with a layup to push York's advantage to a game-high 11 points (74-63) with 3:28 remaining. The Cardinals held New Rochelle to just five points in the final 2:24 of play to secure the win.
York produced a season-best 76 points as
Ellma Hodzic's career-high 16 points led three other Cardinals in double-digits. Hodzic nabbed a team-leading three steals and posted her first-career double-double by setting career highs with 11 rebounds and six assists. Roshcer scored 15 points (3-of-8 3FG) while Trawalleh followed with 13 (7-of-8 FT) off the bench.
Keyla Cabrera, who posted her second-career double-double, set a career high with 12 rebounds and scored 12 points to tie her personal record.
Mac-Dege Dessources hauled in nine of her 16 boards on the offensive end.
Melissa Perez (10-of-18 FG, 7-of-14 3FG) poured in a game-high 27 points off the bench to pace New Rochelle. Dar'Neisha Brice added 20 points (4-of-6 3FG) and Ashley Martin contributed 11.
York finished the evening shooting 33.8 percent (25-of-74) from the field, 35 percent (7-of-20) from three-point territory and made a season-best 19 free throws at a rate of 55.9 percent (19-of-34). The Cardinals compiled a +28 rebounding margin (76-48) to pull down a season-best 76 boards. York also scored 13 second-chance points off 29 offensive rebounds while converting 15 Blue Angel turnovers into 15 points.
The Cardinals continue their three-game homestand Saturday (Dec. 15) with a non-conference showdown against the Ramapo College Roadrunners (5-5) at 5:30 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
