BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The York College women's soccer team (0-11-1) hosted the University of Valley Forge (5-4) on Monday night and played a hard-fought contest, falling in overtime by a slim 1-0 margin.
The game was a gridlock for all of regulation as both sides fought tirelessly in a very physical matchup. Half number one was quiet with neither team gaining an edge as Valley Forge led 11-2 in shots and 5-4 in corners while York led 5-1 in saves at intermission.
The best scoring opportunity for either side in regulation came in the 53rd minute as Ashley Depointe fired a laser from 25 yards out for the Patriots the clanged off the crossbar. York doubled their shot total in the second half, firing four, but 90 minutes ended with zeroes in both goal columns.
Overtime was quick and easy as Jordyn Clarke launched the ball 40 yards leading Alondra Hernandez who beat the York keeper one-on-one and tapped in the game-winner. For the Cardinals,
Taylor Bellmon led with three shots while
Denise Tasipanta added two and
Yvonne Zapata attempted one.
Stephanie Gutierrez saved five shots in defeat.
Next up for the Cardinals is a conference matchup against John Jay on Wednesday (Oct. 10) at Keith Williams Park beginning at 2:30 p.m.
