JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in a quad match that kicked off the 2018 season Sunday. York lost 3-1 (21-25, 25-13, 30-28, 25-17) to the College of Saint Elizabeth and 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-13) to Penn State University-Altoona.
St. Elizabeth Recap
York got off to a strong start, taking the first set thanks to a .240 hitting percentage. However, St. Elizabeth picked up its play in the second set and evened up the match.
The third set was the pivotal set of the match. Trailing 23-21, York scored three straight points and had a chance to clinch the set. However, a York attack error tied the set at 24-24. The Cardinals would then have two more opportunities to take the set, but each time they responded with a hitting error that kept St. Elizabeth's hopes alive. St. Elizabeth would eventually close out the set with a kill and a York attack error.
The Cardinals had a chance in the fourth set, but with the Eagles leading 19-17, Josh Ramos fired off six straight aces to clinch the match for his team.
In the loss, York was led by
Frederis Tapia, who had 13 kills and a .391 hitting percentage.
Kevin Campbell finished with a career-high 12 kills and
Adil Manji recorded 30 assists.
St. Elizabeth was led by Ramos who finished with an impressive 16 kills (.454 hitting percentage) and ten aces.
PSU-Altoona Recap
The Cardinals went down quietly in a match that took under an hour to finish. PSU hit .305 for the match and held York to a negative hitting percentage.
In the loss, York got five kills apiece from Campbell and
Akil Vaughn.
PSU-Altoona was led by Ryan Dry, who was a perfect 10-for-10 in hitting attempts.
With the loss, York is now 0-2. They will host NJCU on Thursday at 7 p.m.
