JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team nearly made a miracle comeback against Medgar Evers College in the final 30 seconds of play, but came up one basket short, losing 74-72 on Monday night.
Medgar Evers was in control the majority of the game and led by seven points with just 30 seconds remaining in the ball game.
Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins made a bucket with 26 seconds left to cut the deficit to five points. After Medgar Evers made one of two free throws to go up by six, York got another lay-up from
Ryan Smart to make it a four-point game with 15 seconds to go.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, York's
Edwin Sainvil stole the ball and made a quick lay-up to make the score 74-72 with 13 seconds remaining. Once again on the inbounds pass, York would force a bad pass out of bounds and the Cardinals had the ball with a chance to tie or win the game.
Following a timeout, York would work the ball around and
Ryan Smart attempted a jumper with a couple seconds left that was off the mark. Medgar Evers grabbed the rebound and dribbled the ball out to run out the clock.
In the loss, Smart finished with a line of 19 points, 16 rebounds and six assists.
Maliqe John scored 17 points and had eight rebounds, while
Jean Joseph scored 14 points and grabbed five boards.
Stephan Cadet scored a career-high 14 points off the bench.
Medgar Evers was led by Maurice Swaby, who had a game-high 24 points. Justin Sutton chipped in 17 points and six assists.
After this game, both teams have identical records of 5-12, 3-6 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will visit first-place Lehman College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
