JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team played a sloppy game and fell to first-place Lehman College, 88-63, on the road Wednesday night.
The Cardinals were hoping for season sweep against Lehman, after they gave the Lightning their first and only CUNYAC loss earlier in the season. But York committed 27 turnovers and those mistakes were too much to overcome.
Lehman turned those 27 turnovers into 26 points and that played a big factor in the game. In addition, although York shot a decent 40 percent from the field, they were just 4-of-23 from three-point range.
York was in the game for most of the first half, but a 13-0 run by the Lightning late in the half pushed Lehman's lead from six points to 19. Lehman forced a few turnovers and were 6-of-8 from the field during the stretch. The Cardinals never challenged Lehman in the second half and trailed by as many 28 points.
The Lightning were led by Jean Marcial, who scored 23 points. Luis Hernandez chipped in 19 and Andrew Utate scored 15 points with nine boards.
York got a team-high 12 points from
Maliqe John and 11 points and seven boards from
Ryan Smart.
Stephan Cadet also chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
York is now 5-13, 3-8 CUNYAC, while Lehman is 15-4, 10-1 CUNYAC. The Cardinals visit the College of Staten Island on Saturday at 1 p.m.
