NEW YORK, N.Y.—Despite forcing 27 turnovers, the York College men's basketball team fell on the road to John Jay College, 83-74, on Wednesday night.
York held a 27-13 edge in the turnover department and scored 27 points off turnovers, yet it still was not enough to get the victory.
The big reason John Jay was able to overcome the sloppy play was their strong outside shooting. They made 47.1 percent of their shots, which included eight three-pointers. York shot at a 38.7 percent clip and made just 4-of-20 from long range.
In the loss,
Edwin Sainvil led York with 21 points and three steals.
Ryan Smart and
Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins each finished with 14 points.
York had no answer for John Jay's Essien Epps, who scored 31 points and made 58.3 percent of his shots from the field, including a big shot in the final minute of play.
York got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 14-3 lead in the opening minutes, but the lead quickly evaporated after a 12-0 John Jay run put the Bloodhounds on top. From there, John Jay would hold a small advantage through the remainder of the first half.
The second half was close as well. York would eventually tie the game up midway through the half at 56-56. However, an 8-0 John Jay run would give the Bloodhounds a lead they would never relinquish.
York had one last run, cutting the deficit to just one point (75-74) with a 1:28 to go following a Smart lay-up. However, Epps would respond with a three-pointer on John Jay's next possession to help seal the win.
With the loss, York drops to 5-10, 3-5 CUNYAC. John Jay improves to 5-10, 3-5 CUNYAC. The Cardinals host Baruch College on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
