BROOKLYN, N.Y.—The York College men's soccer team could not climb out of an early deficit and fell short with its comeback attempt, losing to Yeshiva University, 2-1, on Tuesday evening.
The Cardinals fell into an early, 2-0, hole after Yeshiva scored a pair of goals just over a minute apart in the 22nd and 23rd minutes.
Julian Ribak score the match's first goal on a rocket from 20 yards out. Alberto Benhamu then drilled a shot from the left wing off a pass from Juan Cotton to put Maccabees up by two goals.
York adjusted its formation for the second half and took control of the game for most of the half. The Cardinals cut the deficit in half in the 61st minute after
Ebrahim Ramos took a through ball from
Wolf Metellus and scored in the bottom left corner. It was the first career goal for the freshman.
York had some chances late in the match to get the equalizer but could not convert.
Ivan Brito took a shot that was turned away in the 90th minute. A corner kick followed the save, but York could not convert.
"It was a very competitive contest," said York Head Coach
Al Meneses. "We settled down after our early mistakes in the first half and fought very hard for the equalizer that never came. Yeshiva was very strong defensively and we ran out of time as they began to break down towards the end. I was very pleased with the effort everyone put into our second match as we get closer to our first conference game on the 20th."
York drops to 1-1, while Yeshiva is now 3-0. The Cardinals will host Medgar Evers College in a non-conference game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Aviator Sports & Events Center.
