Men’s Volleyball Swept by Mt. St. Vincent

JAMAICA, N.Y.— The York College men's volleyball team was swept by the College of Mt. St. Vincent, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-16) in a non-conference match at home on Wednesday night.

Frederis Tapia led York in the loss with five kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Burrel Kirk Murray added five kills and two blocks.  Akeem George finished with four total blocks and Paramvir Singh had a match-high six digs.

Mt. St. Vincent quickly jumped out in front in set #1, taking a 6-1 lead following a kill from Sean O'Connor. They continually extended the lead and pushed the advantage to 17-5 following back-to-back aces from Owen Smith.  They would close the set with their largest lead of 15 points. Mt. St. Vincent hit .353 as a team in the set and limited York to just three kills.

York took an early 3-0 lead in the second set, but saw the advantage quickly evaporate as Mt. St. Vincent went on a 6-1 run to take a 6-4 advantage.  It was still close at 8-7, but a 9-2 Mt. St. Vincent run made it 17-9 and prompted a York timeout.  After the time out, Mt. St. Vincent's Tyler Cucullu served up four straight aces to put the Dolphins up 21-9.  They finished off the set a few points later.

The Cardinals once again had an early lead in the final set, but could not on. After leading 6-5, the Cardinals surrendered six straight points to the Dolphins.  MSV's Neven Skoblar helped spark the run with three aces.  From there, Mt. St. Vincent was able to maintain its comfortable lead and finish off the match.

The Dolphins were led by Owen Smith, who had a match-high nine kills with a .421 hitting percentage. Cucullu had 23 assists and four aces.

With the loss, York is now 3-13. Mt. St. Vincent improves to 8-9. The Cardinals return to action with an important CUNYAC tri-match at home on Saturday. The Cardinals host Medgar Evers College at 12 p.m. and Baruch College at 4 p.m.
