JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's volleyball team split a home CUNYAC tri-match on Saturday, defeating Medgar Evers College, 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-16), but falling to Baruch College, 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-13).
Medgar Evers Recap
The Cardinals played sloppy at the start and Medgar Evers took advantage, taking a 10-6 lead. The Cardinals slowly chipped away and took their first lead of the set at 14-13. From there, it went back and forth with Medgar eventually going ahead, 22-21. But an
Akeem George kill and then two straight
Neko Lyttle aces gave York set point. They finished off the set two points later on a Medgar Evers service error. York won the set despite hitting -.143 as a team.
In the second set, the Cougars once again took an early lead—this time going up 4-3. However, York dominated play from there. York scored four straight to go up 7-4 and then extended that lead up to 16-10 following a
Larry Moore kill. York would outscore Medgar Evers 10-3 the rest of the way to take a 2-0 set lead. The Cardinals were much more efficient in this set, hitting .385 as a team (13 kills, 3 errors, 26 attempts).
In the final set, the two teams were tied at 7-7 early, but York took control from there. The Cardinals rolled off five straight points, capped off by a
Kevin Campbell kill to go up 12-7. From there, York extended its lead to as much as eight (20-12) after a
Frederis Tapia kill and would finish off the match shortly after. The Cardinals were dominant in the final set, hitting .500 and collecting 16 kills.
Tapia led York with eight kills and a .312 percentage, while George had seven kills and a .500 percentage.
Adil Manji and
Kit Keeratikanchanavong combined to record 30 assists on the afternoon. Campbell finished with a match-high eight digs.
Baruch Recap
Baruch took an early 7-1 lead in the first set and never relinquished it. York closed to 7-3 after two straight Tapia kills, but Baruch would continue to extend its lead the rest of the set. The Bearcats hit .286 in the set, compared to -.053 for York.
In set #2, Baruch once again took the early lead, but the Cardinals closed to 9-8 after a
Kevin Campbell kill and a block by
Neko Lyttle and
Larry Moore. However, Baruch would score five of the next six points to go up 14-9. They would not look back from there.
The third set was more of the same, as Baruch jumped out to an early lead and continued to expand its lead until closing out the match at 25-13.
York was led by Tapia again, who had four kills and hit .375. Baruch got nine kills apiece from Stephen Roach and Nicholas Godino.
York is now 4-14, 1-4 CUNYAC. Baruch is 7-10, 6-0 CUNYAC and Medgar Evers is 0-18, 0-8 CUNYAC after two losses. York will visit Purchase College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
