JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's volleyball team earned a hard-fought victory over Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon by a score of 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 31-29) for its first win of the season.
Although the Cardinals won in straight sets, each set was in doubt until the very end. In the first set, the two teams were knotted up at 21-21, until York closed by scoring the final four points.
Kit Keeratikanchanavong had three aces in a row to clinch the first set.
The second set was another close one. York led by just one point late, but scored five out of six points to go up 22-17. They would hold on for the win from there.
The final set was an epic battle between the two teams. Yeshiva looked poised to force a fourth set after they went up 24-20. However, York rallied for four straight points to tie the set up at 24-24. The two teams then continued to exchange points until three straight Yeshiva errors gave York the match. In all, York fought off eight set points.
York featured a balanced attack in this one, with
Akeem George and
Burrel Kirk Murray each recording a team-high seven kills.
Kevin Campbell had five kills, while
Frederis Tapia registered four kills, six digs and four total blocks. Keeratikanchanavong finished with 19 assists, eight aces and nine digs.
The Cardinals are now 1-6, while Yeshiva is 0-1. York returns to action on Friday with a home match vs. Southern Virginia University at 7 p.m.
