JERSEY CITY, N.J.—Led by a strong performance from freshman
NyKeisha Paul, the York College women's basketball team earned it's first-ever win against New Jersey City University by a score of 70-61 on the road Tuesday night.
Paul scored a career-high 21 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists. Also chipping in for the Cardinals was
Karen Bellamy, who finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Claudia Rhoden added 12 points off the bench. York was 0-7 all-time against NJCU coming into the game. The Cardinals now improve to 3-5 on the year.
NJCU, who fell to 0-9 with the loss, was led by Nazjae James and Kiara Wood, who had 13 points apiece.
The Cardinals faced an 11-point first-quarter deficit but rallied in the second quarter, closing the half on a on a 10-2 run to close the gap to three points. A three-pointer by
Giovana Rosado just before the buzzer helped York go into the locker room with some momentum.
The Cardinals trailed for most of the third quarter but pulled ahead late after a
Juliet Matthews jumper followed by a Paul steal and lay-up in the final seconds of the quarter put York up 53-47.
York turned up its play in the fourth quarter, scoring the first eight points to take a commanding 14-point advantage. They would go up by as many as 15 points and would not let NJCU get closer than nine the rest of the way.
York will now look to make it three straight wins when they host U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday at noon.
