CHESTER, P.A.—For the second day in a row, the York men's basketball team suffered a tough loss at the Widener University Tip-off for Autism Awareness Tournament Saturday. The Cardinals nearly overcame a 15-point second half deficit in the consolation game to Bryn Athyn, but fell by a score of 69-65.
Trailing by 15 points with 16 minutes to go, York would go on a 16-4 run over the next ten minutes to cut the deficit down to 53-50. The Cardinals played solid defense during the stretch and got key buckets form
Darin Dove,
Jean Joseph and
Edwin Sainvil.
The run would prompt a Bryn Athyn timeout. The timeout allowed Bryn Athyn to regroup and they were able to stretch their lead back up to 11 points after an 11-3 run.
York would once again battle back and cut the deficit down to three once more after a
Reggie Outlaw three-pointer made it 68-65 with ten seconds left. York had no choice but to foul on the next possession and Bryn Athyn made one free throw to seal the win.
The Cardinals shot 40.4 percent compared to 34.4 percent for Bryn Athyn, while the rebounding battle was fairly even (46-41 in favor of Bryn Athyn). However, York was done in by poor free throw shooting, making just 10 of 21 shots (47.6%).
Joseph led York with 17 points on 70 percent shooting, while Sainvil chipped in 15 and Dove had 11. Bryn Athyn had four players in double figures, led by Rahim Washington with 16 points.
York (0-3) will host Stevenson University at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
