Men’s Basketball Tops Stevenson in Home Opener

JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team put together a solid performance in their 2017-18 home opener, defeating previously unbeaten Stevenson University, 88-80, on Tuesday evening.

York's Edwin Sainvil led York with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Ryan Smart recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jean Joseph netted 14 points, while Jonathan Jones had 11 points and seven boards.  Darin Dove and Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins chipped in ten points. Stevenson (3-1) was led by Danzel Wright with 22 points.

The game was close throughout with neither team holding much of an advantage. The Mustangs got an early seven-point lead following a three-pointer by Kyle Wooldrige in the opening minutes to make it 10-3.  The Cardinals quickly erased the lead, going on a 12-4 run to move ahead by one point.  Smart had six points during the run.  The two teams would trade leads through the remainder of the half, with York taking a two-point lead at halftime (34-32).

The two teams would continue to go back and forth through most of the second half until York started to get some separation with about seven minutes left.

Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins was the catalyst at the end of the game.  With York leading by three, Forehand-Jenkins netted a three to put York up 70-64. Jenkins followed with two more buckets after a Stevenson score and gave the Cardinals a 74-66 cushion with 3:06 to play.  On York's next possession, Jenkins drained another three to push York's lead to double-digits and seal the win for his team.

With the win, York is now 1-3. They will be idle until next Friday, December 1 when they visit CUNYAC rival Baruch College at 7:30 p.m.
