CHESTER, PA - The York men's basketball team lost in a heartbreaker on Friday night by a score of 69-68, following a last-second buzzer beater by Rosemont College.
The Cardinals, led by both
Edwin Sainvil and
Jean Joseph, with a total of eight points going into half, managed to lead over the Rosemont Ravens, 35-32. York, as a unit, maintained a fast pace from the start and attempted 37 total shots from the field, while shooting 38%, including four three pointers for the first half; while limiting the Ravens to only 23 shots and 43% shooting from the field.
However, in the second half, even with York improving their shooting percentage from the field to 44%, Rosemont College was able to limit the Cardinals in transition and force them to play more in their half-court offense, limiting York to only 25 shots from the field. On the other side, the Ravens took a page out of York's playbook and began to push the pace to create their offense in the second half, leading to more attempts, free throws, and the eventual final shot.
Prior to the final shot, York had taken the lead by one point on a
Jean Joseph lay-up with just 17 seconds to go. Joseph was fouled on the basket but failed to make the free throw. That would prove costly, as Tarrell Willis would make the go-ahead lay-up with just one second to go.
York had three players score in double figures.
Ryan Smart led the way in scoring with 18 points, while grabbing 14 boards.Â
Edwin Sainvil had 12, while also contributing three assists. Joseph added 13 points and seven rebounds.
For the Rosemont Ravens, Mekhi Clemons had a game-high 21 points to go along with three assists.
Tonight's game was the opening round of the Tip-off for Autism Awareness Tournament held at Widener University. York will now play in the consolation game tomorrow vs. Bryn Athyn at 2 p.m.
