JAMAICA, N.Y..—The York College men's basketball team finally broke through for its first win of the season on Monday, rallying to top rival Brooklyn College, 82-71. The win was also the first for new Head Coach
Nolan Adams.
It was a total team effort for York with five players reaching double figures in scoring. Sophomore
Ryan Smart had a monster game, recording 18 points, 18 rebounds, seven steals and six assists.
Josh Perez, who was playing in just his second game of the season, finished with a double-double of 17 points and ten rebounds.
Sasha Clarida had 11 points off the bench and
Ryan St. John had ten.
Edwin Sainvil scored ten points and shot 5-of-7 from the field in just ten minutes of action in his season debut.
It looked like the Cardinals were headed for another loss after falling behind 9-0 at the start. York clawed back to cut it to 14-11 following a Smart jumper with 11:46 left in the opening half. But Brooklyn pulled away again, going into the half with a 14-point advantage.
The second half saw the Bulldogs maintain a double-digit lead until a 13-0 run by the Cardinals evened the score up at 52-52 with 11:45 to play. Perez helped spark the run with a three-pointer and a lay-up on consecutive possessions.
Another big York run followed moments later, this time with York scoring ten unanswered to go up 66-57. Back-to-back Smart buckets capped off the run. That would catapult the Cardinals to the win.
