CCNY Rallies to Top York Men’s Basketball

NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team could not hold on to a 12-point second-half lead and fell to the City College of New York, 92-86, on the road Wednesday night.

York led for most of the first half and looked to be in control in the second half after a Ryan St. John three with 14:29 to go made it 59-47 in favor of the Cardinals.

However, foul trouble would allow CCNY to get back into the game.  The Cardinals committed 23 personal fouls in the second half, which allowed the Beavers to go to the line 30 times.  CCNY took advantage, connecting on 25 of them.  York also had four players foul out, including two of its starters.

CCNY pulled ahead by one, 66-65, with 10:18 to play.  They would push the lead to seven points late, until a three-pointer by Brett Walker cut the lead down to two points with just seven seconds remaining.  Unfortunately, York never got another shot to tie the game, as CCNY made their free throws to seal the win.

Edwin Sainvil scored a team-high 28 points in just his second game of the season, while Ryan St. John netted 14.  Ryan Smart had 13 points, 14 rebounds and three steals.

Khalil Hamer had 33 points and eight boards, while Mark Richards scored 25 for CCNY.

York drops to 1-13, 1-6 CUNYAC, while CCNY improves to 8-6, 6-2 CUNYAC. York will host John Jay College on Friday at 8 p.m.
