STATEN ISLAND, NY –The York College Cardinals came up short Wednesday, losing to the College of Staten Island Dolphins by a score of 7-0 in their first CUNYAC match of the season.
The Dolphins (4-3-1, 1-1 CUNYAC) kept the York defense busy early and often in this one. They opened the scoring in the third minute when Freshman Ryan Layman scored his first goal off a low cross from Peter Hanna. Senior Marcin Klim would net the second goal for Staten Island in the 22nd minute on a header assisted by Ilir Papraniku. Junior Adrian Cosovic would score his first of four goals on the afternoon in the 39th minute as he tapped in a cross from Matthew Bessler, giving the Dolphins a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The second half scoring for Staten Island began early in the 46
th minute when freshman midfielder Christopher Lopez dribbled through the defense for a low goal.
Cosovic would net the final three goals for the Dolphins, the first of which came in the 52nd minute on an assist from Bessler. Cosovic would score again, this time from freshman Chris Li, in the 58th minute on a through ball that he would put past the goalkeeper. The final goal for Cosovic and for the Dolphins, came in the 60th minute on a header assisted by Juan Candela, which was the result of a Staten Island corner kick.
Despite allowing seven goals, York keeper
Nigel Sampson stopped a career-high 15 shots. Sampson was busy all afternoon, as CSI fired 51 shots, 22 of which were on goal. The Dolphins also held an 18-0 advantage in corner kicks.
With the loss, York falls to 0-7, 0-1 CUNYAC on the season. The Cardinals are back in action on September 24th at 12 p.m. against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs.
