Women’s Volleyball Earns Split at CUNYAC Tri-Match

BROOKLYN, NY—The York College women's volleyball team defeated Medgar Evers College 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20), but later fell to Baruch College 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-16) in the first CUNY Athletic Conference tri-match of the season.

In the win over host Medgar Evers, York used the service game to earn the advantage, recording 14 aces on the day. Nathy Reyes accounted for six of those, while freshmen Wilnoska Perez and Chayana Jimenez had three apiece.  On the defensive side of the ball, Perez and Jimenez also recorded nine digs and seven digs respectively.

In the opening set, York held a comfortable 24-17 lead, only to see the Cougars score six straight points to make it 24-23.  The Cardinals finally finished off the set after a MEC attack error.

The second set was all York, thanks to a 7-0 run that turned a 10-10 tie to a 17-10 advantage. Reyes had two of her aces during this stretch.

In the final set, Medgar Evers had set point (24-21), but York rallied for five straight points with Argenis Contreras serving to close out the match.

York couldn't get much going against Baruch, who took all three sets comfortably.  York managed just seven kills in the match.  They also had no answer for Baruch's Stephanie Cornwell, who finished with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .636.

Shauncia McClendon led York with five kills, while Jimenez had eight digs.

York (2-4, 1-1 CUNYAC) returns to action on Wednesday with a road contest at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at 7 p.m.
