JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's volleyball team pulled out a thrilling, five-set victory over the City College of New York in the quarterfinals of the City University of New York Athletic Conference Championship Tuesday. The Cardinals won by a score of 3-2, (23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 15-10).
York (13-20) now advances to the CUNYAC semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. where they will face top-seeded Baruch College at 6 p.m. It will be their eighth straight appearance in the semifinal round of the CUNYAC Championship. Should they win that match, they will play in the finals on the same night at 8 p.m.
The Cardinals, who are the #4 seed, had beaten #5 CCNY twice during the regular season, but both contests were tough matches, and tonight's match was the toughest of them all.
York dropped a back-and-forth first set but rebounded to win the second set convincingly. The third set was another battle, but CCNY pulled it out after Sebastjano Aga powered his team to victory with three straight kills.
In the fourth set, York led 10-9 and then pulled away after five straight points put them up 15-9. They would cruise to the fourth-set win to force a deciding fifth set.
In the final set, York took a 5-4 lead after a pair of
Randy Adams aces, which prompted a CCNY timeout. A few points later, the Cardinals got some breathing room when a couple CCNY attack errors and an Adams kill made it 12-8 in favor of York. York would then finish off the match after another CCNY attack error.
Randy Adams recorded his first career triple-double, finishing with 19 kills, 12 assists and 11 digs.
Anson Webb had 13 kills with a .400 hitting percentage and six total blocks.
Larry Moore added eight kills with a .500 hitting percentage and six blocks, while
Akeem George finished with six kills and seven blocks. In all, the Cardinals totaled 15 blocks—its highest total of the season. Libero
Paramvir Singh recorded 15 digs and setter
Jonathan Liao had 28 assists.
"The blockers really stepped up tonight," said Head Coach Andre Titus. "I thought we passed the ball really well, too."
CCNY was led by Aga, who had a ridiculous 38 kills. However, he also had 24 errors in 100 total attempts (.140). Setter Oleksandr Boychuk had 50 assists. CCNY finishes the season with a record of 8-19.
