The York College softball team was swept in a doubleheader on Wednesday by the College at Saint Elizabeth by scores of 14-1 and 9-1 respectively.
Without their best pitcher and best hitter, the Cardinals struggled in both facets of the game. They recorded only three hits in each game, and out of the 10 innings Saint Elizabeth batted, they scored in nine of them.
In the first game, York took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Alyssa King manufactured the run completely by herself. She led off the game with a single, stole second and third, and then scored on a wild pitch. The lead did not last long, as Saint Elizabeth scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cardinals threatened in the third inning, loading the bases with one out, but were unable to score as the next two batters both grounded out. The Eagles kept adding to their lead all game and it proved too much for York to handle.
The second game was more of the same for York. Saint Elizabeth scored the first two runs of the game. The Cardinals were able to cut the deficit to one in the third inning. King singled, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
Nathy Reyes, and then scored on an error by the Eagles. Saint Elizabeth was able to create separation in the bottom half of the third, scoring two runs. They scored two more in the fifth, and three in the sixth to bring the game to an end.
Reyes,
Chyla Guevara, and
Kimberly Barnes also added hits for York on the day.
York falls to 3-23 overall on the season. They close out the season on Friday with a doubleheader at the College of New Rochelle starting at 6:15. The two teams met last Friday, where they split a doubleheader.
