The York College softball team fell in game one today vs. The College of New Rochelle by the score of 14-4, but was able to get revenge in game two, winning 6-4.
The Cardinals were without their best offensive player today, 2X reigning CUNYAC Freshman of the Week
Nicole Ovelheira, but she may not have been able to help in the first game anyway. The more significant absence was
Priscilla Lallave, the team's best pitcher. She was unable to get to the game until the third inning and by then, York was already down 10-3. New Rochelle scored four more runs in the third off Lallave, but she was able to settle in after that.
York was able to get at least one hit in every inning, but were unable to string together hits for a big inning. They scored three runs in the first inning a singles by
Chyla Guevara and
Shauneille Sinanan. The inning could have been bigger, but
Nathy Reyes lined into a double play to bring the inning to a screeching halt. The Cardinals did not score again until the fifth inning on an RBI single by Reyes, but that was all they would get.
In the second game, New Rochelle grabbed the early 1-0 lead, but York came right back in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs on two errors by the Blue Angels and an RBI single by
Jailene Rojas. They added another run in the second inning, when Lallave singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Guevara.
New Rochelle got two runs in the third to cut York's lead to one, but in the fifth inning, Guevara tripled and scored when Sinanan reached on an error. Sinanan was able to cross the plate on an RBI single by
Kimberly Barnes. Those insurance runs deemed important as New Rochelle scored one run in the seventh. However, that was all they could muster, and York came out victorious.
Lallave pitched a complete game, earning the win while striking out a career-high 12 batters, and only allowing three earned runs.
This brings a close the home portion of the schedule for the Cardinals, but they still have two more road tests, the first being The College of St. Elizabeth on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
