York Softball Puts Up Crooked Numbers in Doubleheader Split at Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, PA—The York College softball team combined to score 24 runs and collect 25 hits in a doubleheader split with the University of Valley Forge on Sunday. York dropped game one, 13-8, but rebounded to win the nightcap, 16-5.

After falling behind 2-0 in game one, the Cardinals tied the score in the top of third.  Alyssa King started the inning off with a single and Chyla Guevara followed with a two-base hit.  King would score on a wild pitch and then Nicole Ovelheira drove in Guevara with a single.

However, Valley Forge (5-18) responded in a big way, plating four runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 10-2 lead.  Two errors in both innings helped set up the Patriots.

York got three runs in the fifth.  They loaded the bases to start the inning and then Ovelheira walked to force in a run.  After a pop up, Darlene Judan and Jailene Rojas followed with RBI singles.   They added three more in the sixth inning, which was highlighted by an RBI double from Nathy Reyes.

The Cardinals could not any closer though, as Valley Forge added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, and then shut the door in the top of the seventh.

Reyes led York in game one, going 3-for-5 with two runs. Ovelheira, Judan and Jailene Rojas each collected two hits.

In game two, York jumped on Valley Forge pitcher Rachel Daniels early.  The Cardinals put a couple runners on in the top of the first, and then got a single from Guevara, a double from Ovelheira and another single from Shauneille Sinanan.  Each hit brought home a run.  One batter later, Jailene Rojas singled home a run to put York on top, 4-0 after one inning.

York followed with five more runs in the second.  A couple errors and some wild pitching, allowed York to put up another big inning.

The Cardinals added three more runs in the third with the big knock coming from the bat of Ovelheira, who had a two-run double.

Another four runs came across in the fourth inning, with three York runs scoring on walks with the bases loaded.   York would then shut the door in the fifth for the five-inning victory.

Guevara earned the win for York, allowing five runs over five innings for her first victory of the year.  She was also 2-for-3 with four runs scored.

Ovelheira had another big game, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.  She's been swinging a hot bat of late and is batting .647 over her last six games with 11 RBIs.  For the year, she is hitting .475 with 21 RBIs.  She already has set a new school record for RBIs, eclipsing the previous record of 20.
Sinanan was a perfect 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run, while Reyes and Rojas were each 2-for-3.

York (2-14) will return to action with a doubleheader vs. John Jay College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Manhattanville College
