BROOKLYN, N.Y.—The York College softball team earned a split of a doubleheader with Brooklyn College on Saturday. York won game one, 6-4, and dropped the second game, 12-7. The win was the first of the year for the Cardinals and the first for new Head Coach
Patrick Malia.
In game one York (1-13, 1-7 CUNYAC) got a solid pitching effort from
Priscilla Lallave, who tossed a complete game, allowing three earned runs and striking out four.
Nicole Ovelheira led York with the bat, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Alyssa King and
Nathy Reyes also had a pair of hits.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. In the first, Ovelheira got an RBI single to bring home Lallave, who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. In the second, York opened the frame with three straight singles from Reyes,
Kimberly Barnes and
Darlene Judan. Reyes would score on a passed ball and Abigail Acosta and King would each add run-scoring singles.
Another Ovelheira RBI in the fifth put York up 5-1. However, a three-run frame by Brooklyn (4-15, 1-7 CUNYAC) in the bottom half of the inning got the Bulldogs back in the game.
York pushed across another run in the sixth to get an insurance run, and then in the bottom of the seventh, Lallave closed out the game with little drama to get the victory.
In game two, York got the early lead again, scoring two runs in the first on a
Shauneille Sinanan sac fly and an Ovelheira RBI double.
However, York quickly allowed the lead to evaporate, allowing two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Things got worse in the second inning, as Brooklyn put up a seven spot. The inning was opened up by a strikeout on a wild pitch, which allowed the runner to reach, and then later an error.
York still made it a game, scoring two runs in the third, and runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.
Ovelheira finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Sinanan had two RBIs. Reyes and Barnes also had an RBI.
York returns to action tomorrow with a road doubleheader at the University of Valley Forge at 2 p.m.
