JAMAICA, NY—After dropping a hard-fought first set, the York College men's volleyball team cruised in the next three to defeat the City College of New York, 3-1 (25-27, 25-12, 25-15, 25-13) to win their fifth straight CUNYAC match.
The match featured a player from each team dominating action. York's
Randy Adams slammed 17 kills with just two errors (.484), while adding five solo blocks, four aces and six digs. CCNY's Sebastijano Aga had 31 kills in a losing effort. The rest of his team had just six kills combined.
The opening set saw both teams battling back and forth until the very end. York looked like they had the set after a
Larry Moore kill made it 24-21 in favor of the Cardinals. But CCNY benefitted from a York error and then two Aga kills to tie it up. Two points later, York had back-to-back errors and CCNY stole the first set.
The Cardinals did not let the disappointment of dropping the first set get to them, as they dominated play from there. York hit .643 in the second set, .429 in the third and .350 in the fourth. They also held CCNY to a -.115 percentage in the third.
Larry Moore also did lots of damage for York, finishing with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Akeem George had nine kills and hit .467.
Paramvir Singh had 15 digs to lead York on defense, and
Jonathan Liao finished with 36 assists and six digs at the setter position.
York is now 9-11, 7-4 CUNYAC. CCNY drops to 6-11, 5-6 CUNYAC. It was an important win for the Cardinals, as CCNY came into the match just one win behind York in the standings for fourth place. They now hold a two-game lead and the tiebreaker over the Beavers. The top four seeds get home matches in the CUNYAC playoffs.
