Men’s Volleyball Rallies to Top John Jay

JAMAICA, N.Y.—In a contest featuring two evenly-matched teams, the York College men's volleyball team came from behind to defeat John Jay College, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19) at home on Thursday night.

Sophomore Anson Webb led the way with a career-high 15 kills to go along with two blocks and eight digs, while junior Randy Adams added 13 kills and 21 assists.  Akeem George chipped in nine kills, while Jonathan Liao finished with 24 assists.  Libero Paramvir Singh recorded 18 digs.  The Cardinals improve to 12-16, 9-4 CUNYAC and have now won seven straight CUNYAC matches.

John Jay was led by Jack Palleschi with 26 kills and by Juan DeJesus, who had 12 kills and 31 assists.

The Cardinals dropped the first set but jumped out to a big advantage in the second to even up the score.

The third set would prove to be pivotal.  York fell behind 14-8 but rallied to eventually tie the score at 20-20 after a Frederis Tapia kill. The two teams then exchanged point until 23-23, when Adams got a kill and then George and Neko Lyttle paired up on a block to give the Cardinals the set.

The fourth set was another battle with both teams going back and forth until the very end. With York holding a 19-18 lead, the Cardinals exploded for five straight points, setting up match point.  York benefitted from some sloppy play by John Jay down the stretch, as they committed three errors in the sequence. George then finished off the match with a kill.

York got some revenge on the Bloodhounds (12-7, 9-3 CUNYAC) after losing to them earlier in the season.   The Cardinals also moved to within one game of John Jay for third place in the CUNYAC standings.

York will return to action next Wednesday with another home match vs. Vassar College at 7 p.m.
