Coachman, Smart lead York to Victory over John Jay

JAMAICA, N.Y.—Chad Coachman scored 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting and dished out eight assists, while Ryan Smart registered 10 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead the York College men's basketball team to a 78-73 win over John Jay College on Tuesday night.

The win improves York's record to 8-14, 5-9 CUNYAC and improves their chances of moving up in the CUNYAC standings with just two games remaining on the schedule.  York sits in seventh place and is one game behind CCNY for sixth place and two games behind Medgar Evers for fifth place.  John Jay drops to 3-21, 2-13 CUNYAC.

York struggled with their shooting in the first half and as a result, trailed at the break 32-29.   However, the Cardinals picked it up in the second half, with Coachman and Smart clicking all night.

The Cardinals trailed by two early in the second half until an 11-2 run put them on top 46-39.  The run was capped in emphatic fashion with an alley-oop from Coachman to Smart.

With 6:35 to go, York then pushed their advantage to 11 points after a Pascal three made it 64-53.  However, the Bloodhounds rallied late and made the Cardinals sweat it out in the final minutes.  With York up by eight, John Jay's Jessie Higgins converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to 75-70 with just under a minute to play.

After York sunk one free throw on the next possession, John Jay got another three-point play from Higgins to cut the lead to three points.

On York's next possession, they ran down the clock but turned it over with 26 seconds left, giving the Bloodhounds a chance to tie the game.

Following a timeout, John Jay worked the ball around and found Essien Epps for a good look from long range, but the shot was off the mark.  York's Anthony Mason got the board and then sealed the game with two made free throws.

Mason finished with 10 points and Jean Joseph added 12 points for York.  John Jay was led by Epps, who had a game-high 28 points.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday with a tough test against first-place Lehman at home. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
