York Men’s Basketball Knocks Off First-Place Lehman College

JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team continued its second-half surge, defeating Lehman College, who entered the game in first place in the City University of New York Athletic Conference, by a score of 75-72.

The Cardinals played arguably their most complete game of the season, shooting nearly 50 percent for the game and getting contributions up and down the roster. Chad Coachman finished with a team-high 15 points and eight assists, while making 6 of 11 shots.  Ryan St. John netted 12 points, while Rashaan Bailey recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.  Ryan Smart had eight points and 10 boards and Sasha Clarida and Larry Moore contributed off the bench with nine points and eight points respectively.

York looked strong from the start, taking an early seven-point lead (11-4) thanks to a tip-in by Anthony Mason.  However, Lehman would make a run to go up by four points (21-17) following an Orlando Minott lay-up.  Lehman continued to hold a slight edge, until the Cardinals pulled back in front just before halftime with a Larry Moore jumper that made it 39-38.

The Cardinals would never relinquish the lead in the second half and went ahead by nine following a Ryan St. John three-pointer with 11:55 to go.  The Cardinals were then looking good to go home with the win when they lead 72-65 after a Coachman dunk with 1:39 to go.

However, poor free throw shooting by the Cardinals down the stretch allowed the Lightning to tie the game.  Lehman scored on three straight possessions—a Chaun Miller lay-up, a Minott three and an Olusegun William jumper to even the score up at 72-72 with 41 seconds to go.

On York's next possession, with Lehman pressing, York's Jean Joseph eluded defenders and threw a beautiful alley-oop to Smart, who slammed it home to put York back on top.

Lehman once again had a chance to tie on the next possession, but Williams missed a jumper and Mason grabbed the rebound. Mason hit one of two free throws to make it a three-point lead, which gave Lehman one more chance to tie it. Lehman fired up two three-pointers in the last nine seconds, but both shots were off the mark, giving York the win.

With the win, York is now 9-15, 6-9 CUNYAC. Lehman drops to 17-7, 11-4 CUNYAC.  Despite the win, York is locked into the seventh seed for the upcoming CUNYAC playoffs with CCNY winning earlier in the night.

York closes out the regular season on Tuesday at home vs. Hunter College at 8 p.m. The senior members of the squad will be honored.  Also, fans will have a chance to win Applebee's gift cards, as well as the grand prize of JetBlue tickets.
