York Men’s Basketball Edged by Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team lost a hard-fought game to the College Staten Island by a score of 67-62 on Saturday afternoon.  Staten Island held off the Cardinals in the final minutes of the game to earn the victory.

York was led by Chad Coachman, who had 16 points and Ryan St. John, who netted 14 points. Both players came off the bench in this one.  Rashaan Bailey chipped in 13 points and six rebounds, while Ryan Smart finished with six points, 11 boards and two blocks.

Staten Island got a big effort from Will Fonseca, who had a game-high 28 points on 12-of-20 shooting, with 12 boards and three steals. Frank Schettino added 19 points.

The Cardinals trailed by just one-point (63-62) with just over a minute to play, following a Coachman lay-up off a fast break.  However, on CSI's next possession, Schettino drained a jumper to put the Dolphins up three.

York had its chances to even up the score but failed to convert on its next two possessions and was then forced to foul.  A pair of free throws by Fonseca with just 18 seconds left would seal the game.

The Dolphins held the lead for most of the contest, but York was never more than a few possessions behind.  York did pull ahead midway through the second half after a St. John three-pointer put the Cardinals up four points (50-46).  However, CSI followed with an 8-0 run, with Fonseca nabbing a couple steals in the stretch, which led to buckets.  That would prove to be the turning point, because York never led again.

York is now 7-15, 4-9 CUNYAC, while Staten Island is 17-5, 10-3 CUNYAC.  The Cardinals will host John Jay College on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
