HOBOKEN, N.J.— The York College men's volleyball team played three matches over the weekend, and went 1-2, defeating Rust College (MS) 3-0 (25-6, 25-2, 25-8) but falling to Mt. Ida College 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-14) and #6 Stevens Institute 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-7).
York started the weekend off on Saturday, playing Mt. Ida College on John Jay College's campus. Mt. Ida played John Jay earlier in the day, but showed no effects of being tired, as they swept the Cardinals in their second match.
Despite the loss, York's
Anson Webb had a great day, recording 11 kills—one shy of a career high—with a .455 hitting percentage.
Akeem George continued his strong sophomore season, finishing with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .417. Freshman
Jonathan Liao had 19 assists.
The on Sunday, York played two matches at Stevens. First, they took on Rust College, who made the trip all the way from Mississippi. Rust was no match for the Cardinals, who earned a lopsided victory. York served up a season-high 25 aces, with 14 coming from Webb.
John Lingad added five aces and Manprit Singh finished with three. George recorded six kills in just seven attempts for a percentage of .857.
Larry Moore had 10 kills in just 12 attempts (.833).
Against, Stevens, the #6 team in the nation and defending national champion, the Cardinals did not fare quite as well. The Ducks picked up the straight-set victory, winning each set convincingly. In the loss, George had another great game, finishing with five kills and a .300 hitting percentage.
York is now 4-8. They visit Brooklyn College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
