BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College women's basketball team held off a late surge and defeated Medgar Evers College, 64-55, on the road Tuesday night.
York never trailed in the game and led by as much as 14 points in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars rallied to the cut the deficit down to just two points in the final minutes. However, York made several big shots from the free throw line, going 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in the final moments to seal the victory.
The Cardinals only shot 26.7 percent from the field, but forced 39 turnovers and attempted 20 more shots from the field to offset the poor shooting. York won the rebounding battle, 64-55, and had 18 second-chance points, which also played a big role in the victory.
Evanda Redwood had 19 points to lead York.
Dayana Jacome made her first start of the season and came up big with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Juliet Matthews added 11 points and
Mayan Charles pulled down 14 rebounds. Medgar Evers was led by Elesha Dieudonne with 15 points.
York is now 1-6, 1-2 CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers is 0-7, 0-2 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will host the College of New Rochelle on Saturday at 1 p.m.
