JAMAICA, N.Y. — The York College women's basketball team dropped their CUNYAC opener to Baruch College, 74-45, on Tuesday evening.
The Cardinals and Bearcats were neck and neck throughout the first quarter. York jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first three minutes. With two and half minutes left in the first, York and Baruch were tied 9-9. York gained back the lead thanks to a three-pointer from
Evanda Redwood, pulling the Cardinals ahead by one, 12-11.
At the end of the first, Baruch held a three-point advantage over York, 17-14. Redwood scored 10 of York's 14 points with the other four points coming from
Rafaella Savva and
Juliet Matthews.
Baruch pulled away in the second quarter with a 12-0 run and took a 36-23 lead heading into the half. The Bearcats continued their run, outscoring the Cardinals 10-3 to start the third quarter. Back-to-back threes from Savva and Giovanna Rosado to start the fourth quarter gave York some momentum, but Baruch went on a 7-0 run to widen the gap.
York's 39 turnovers proved to be detrimental as Baruch scored 39 points off of them. The Cardinals also struggled to defend in the paint, allowing the Bearcats to score 48 points in the paint.
The Cardinals were led by Redwood who finished with 22 points, four rebounds and two steals. Redwood was 4-for-5 behind the arc.
Mayan Charles had a game-high 14 rebounds while
Diamond Jackson finished with 10 rebounds.
Jacqueline Kennedy had a game-high 28 points for Baruch and Shannon Barrett had 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday when they host the College of Staten Island for a 1 p.m. game.
