JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team fell to Baruch College in its first CUNYAC game of the season at home Tuesday night by a score of 85-56.
Poor shooting by York was a big reason for the loss. The Cardinals shot just 27.6 percent on the evening. Meanwhile, Baruch connected on 51.6 percent of its shots.
York fell behind early in the first half, allowing the Bearcats to jump out to a 15-4 lead that they would not look back from. Baruch would continue to pull away, eventually going up by a score of 38-21 to close out the half.
The second half would again prove a challenge for York. The Cardinals would allow the Bearcats to extend their lead to as much as 50-27. From this point on however, York would begin scoring consistently, outscoring Baruch the rest of the way by a score of 29-25, but this certainly was not enough to complete the comeback.
Baruch was led by the 17 points of Chimaechi Ekekeugbor, as well Doyin Isaac, who had 15 points and six assists. As for York, they were led by the 12 points of
Ryan St. John and the 11 points of
Ryan Smart. Smart also led the team with nine total rebounds on the night, while St. John and
Sasha Clarida each had a season-high three steals for the Cardinals.
With the win, Baruch improves to 5-1 (1-0 CUNYAC), while York falls to 0-5 (0-1 CUNYAC). The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00 pm against the College of Staten Island. This will be the second game of a doubleheader, as the York women will take on the College of Staten Island at 1:00 pm.
