PURCHASE, NY – The York College Cardinals fell Tuesday night to the Purchase College Panthers (3-1) in a close contest by a score of 94-88.
Despite outscoring the Panthers in the second half, strong runs by Purchase in the first did the Cardinals in. York kept it close to start, bringing the score as close as 23-20. From this point however, Purchase would outscore York by a score of 28-19, ending the first half at a score of 51-39.
York would then bounce back with a much stronger second half, outscoring Purchase 49-43. The Cardinals would have several strong runs in the second half, led by
Ryan St. John's 18 points in the half, including four 3-pointers, and
Ryan Smart's 12 points and eight rebounds in the second. Despite the strong second half comeback, York fell short in the effort. After trailing by as much as 14 in the half, York closed to within four points, but could not get any closer than that.
The loss was not to be overshadowed by the performances of St. John, Smart, and
Larry Moore. St. John scored a game high 25 points in 37 minutes. Smart would total 20 points with eight rebounds, while Moore would score nine points with a game-high 17 rebounds.
Shaheim Greene added 13 points and shot 75 percent from the field.
York would shoot 45.5% from the field in the contest, while Purchase shot just 40.3%. However, free throws continue to be an issue for York, as the Cardinals shot just 47.6 percent (10-for-21)
DeShawn Cann would lead the Panthers in scoring, tallying 17 points, while Tarik Allicock recorded a double-double, including 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The loss drops York to 0-4 with still plenty to play. The Cardinals will be back in action at home on November 29
th at 8 p.m. against Baruch College.
