BROOKLYN, N.Y.—After three of its starters fouled out in the fourth quarter, the York College women's basketball team blew a fourth-quarter lead to Yeshiva University, and fell by a score of 61-53.
York held a seemingly comfortable eight-point lead with just eight minutes to go after
Rafaella Savva drained a jumper to put York up 43-37. But shortly after that Savva and
Mayan Charles both fouled out. This was after fellow starter
Juliet Matthews had already fouled out in the quarter.
With three starters out of the game, Yeshiva took advantage. A three-point play by Yeshiva's Laura Betesh with just under five minutes to play cut the deficit to one. A few moments later Yeshiva pulled ahead with three more free throws that resulted from a York technical foul. The Cardinals managed just one point the rest of the way and Yeshiva would pull away for the victory.
In all, Yeshiva took 42 shots from the free throw line, which accounted for 27 of their points. By comparison, York made it to the line just 18 times. Yeshiva also held a 58-41 rebound advantage, which led to 22 second-chance points for the Maccabees.
The Cardinals held Yeshiva to just 29 percent shooting from the field and 8.7 percent shooting from three-point range, but Yeshiva's second-chance points and free throws were too much too overcome.
In the loss York (0-4) got 19 points, four steals and five assists from
Evanda Redwood and 12 points and four steals from
Rafaella Savva. Matthews had six points, six boards and four steals.
Yeshiva (2-1) was led by Michal Alge, who scored a game-high 24 points with 22 rebounds.
The Cardinals will have a week off and will return home to take on Baruch College in its CUNYAC opener next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
