JAMAICA, N.Y. — The York women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a loss to New Jersey City University, 68-30.
Allison Ahmed led York in points with eight, while Tu'ziah Hall led New Jersey City with 12 points. Ziyadah Williams had a game-high nine rebounds, while
Mayan Charles led York with seven.
York would be the first team to score in the game with a steal and layup by
Evanda Redwood. But, New Jersey City went on an 8-2 run to pull out to a quick six-point lead. York answered with a 9-5 run to close up the gap and make it a two-point game, 15-13, at the end of the first. That would be as close as the Cardinals would come to regaining the lead. During the second period, New Jersey City pulled out to a 12-point lead and would only further their lead in the third and fourth periods.
The first half saw York's best performance as they had 10 points in the paint and held the advantage in field goal percentage over New Jersey City, 36.4% to 34.2%. While New Jersey City improved their shooting from the first half to the second, the Cardinals worsened as they failed to put one three-pointer in the second half (0-7) and managed just one free throw (1-5).
In the third and fourth periods, the Gothic Knight scored 23 points off the Cardinals' turnovers. The Cardinals finished the game with 37 turnovers. They also struggled offensively as they shot 24.5%, while the Gothic Knights shot 36.8%. New Jersey City held the advantage over York in rebounds (50-46), assists (13-7) and steals (20-9).
York returns to action on Friday when they travel to Maryland to take part in the Frostburg State Tournament. The Cardinals take on host Frostburg State at 6 p.m.
