BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Trailing by two goals at the half, the York College women's soccer team rallied to score three goals in the second half and defeated St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn, 3-2, on Monday night.
Despite dominating the time of possession and holding a big shot advantage (19-7) throughout the match, York found itself in an early 2-0 hole. A foul in the goalie box in just the sixth minute of play resulted in a penalty kick for the Bears' Christina Caruso. She would convert the kick to give her team a 1-0 lead.
In the 22nd minute, Caruso made a nice pass from midfield and found Christine Emigholz, who went one-on-one and beat the keeper to make it 2-0.
In the second half, York turned up the pressure and kept the ball on their side of the field for the majority of the time. They finally broke through in the 53rd minute when a through ball from
Sheniqua Greenland found
Monique Surf, who beat the keeper to make it a game.
However, it looked like St. Joseph's might escape with the victory when they still held a lead with only ten minutes to go. But in the 81st minute, senior
Estefany Delgado dribbled through St. Joseph's defenders and rifled a shot in the net to tie the score at 2-2.
Then in the 87th minute, Greenland and Surf hooked up again when Greenland lofted a pass over the top to Surf, who put in the game-winner.
The win puts York's record at 4-5, while St. Joseph's drops to 1-7. The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday when they visit Sarah Lawrence College at 7 p.m.
