Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Kyle Neuendorf

Solid Defense Enough for Men’s Soccer to Earn 1-1 Draw with John Jay

BROOKLYN, N.Y.– The game conditions for the CUNYAC matchup may have been cold and windy, but the York College men's soccer team's defense was red hot. The match went into double overtime and ended in a 1-1 tie with John Jay College.

York (0-9-1, 0-3-1 CUNYAC) was lead by a two-goalie tandem, as Erik Bailon started the first half, registering one save. His counterpart, Nigel Sampson took over in the second half and finished the contest with seven saves.

After a scoreless first half, John Jay amped up the offensive pressure, finally finding the back of the net in the 55th minute on their 10th shot of the match. Gerardo Flores-Ramirez was able to sneak a low shot past the Keeper to get his first goal of the season. Curtis Harbers was able to find Flores-Ramirez from the right side of the box.

The Cardinals responded very well to the goal, as 63 seconds later John Ruiz was able to tie the score at 1-1, thanks to a perfect corner kick from teammate Eric Herrera. Ruiz had a game-high two shots for York.

The match would end up going the distance, as two overtimes were not enough to find a winner in this one. John Jay had seven shots in the two overtimes as keeper Nigel Sampson stood tall and stopped them all. York only had one shot in the 20 minutes of extra time. The draw moved John Jay's record to (2-9-1, 1-2-1 CUNYAC).

Next up for the Cardinals is a match against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Monday night. They enter the game with a record of 3-6 but are in action later today against Sage.
