JAMAICA, N.Y.— York's
Jigcara Grant and
Samantha Bond continued their impressive play of late, but their efforts were in vain, as the York women's basketball team fell to CUNYAC-foe Brooklyn College on Tuesday night by a score of 70-47.
Grant, who came into the game ranked third in the nation in rebounding, grabbed a career-high 25 rebounds to go along with a career-high 16 points. She is now averaging 17.3 boards per game, which could potentially move her up further in the national ranks. Meanwhile,
Samantha Bond, who was coming off back-to-back 20-point performances, scored 16 points and drained four three-pointers.
However, York's bench production was a problem in this one. Between Grant, Bond and
Angelika Ruggiano (12 points), the trio scored 44 of York's 47 points.
York looked strong out of the gate, taking a 13-11 lead after the first quarter with Bond scoring 11 of York's points. However, Brooklyn adjusted by keying in on Bond the rest of the game, slowing her down and holding her to just five points the rest of the way.
The Cardinals could not get enough production from the rest of the team and Brooklyn went on to dominate the second and third quarters, outscoring York 21-10 in each period. That would put the game well out of reach.
Brooklyn was led by Justine Vento, who scored a game-high 18 points. Taylor Gallagher had 11 points and seven assists.
The Bulldogs improves to 9-4, 5-0 CUNYAC with the win. York drops to 2-10, 1-4 CUNYAC with the loss. York will visit Hunter College on Friday at 5 p.m.
