Hunter Pulls Away in Second Half to Top York Women’s Basketball

NEW YORK, N.Y.—Hunter College outscored the York College women's basketball team by 13 points in the second half to defeat the Cardinals, 74-59, on Friday night.

York led by six points after the first quarter and trailed by just two points at halftime, but Hunter controlled play in the second half to pull away and earn the victory.

Angelika Ruggiano scored a game-high 26 points to lead York on the night. Most of her scoring could be attributed to strong free throw shooting—she made 15-of-17 from the charity stripe.  Ruggiano also pushed her career points total to 943, as he looks to become the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 points.

Jigcara Grant scored seven points and pulled down 14 rebounds.  She is now averaging 17 boards per game, which ranks third in the nation. Samantha Bond chipped in 14 points and Shauncia McClendon made her season debut, adding nine points, five boards and three steals.

Leading by one point (17-16) near the end of the first quarter, York went on a 7-2 run to close the period with all their points coming on made free throws. York pushed that lead to nine points on a McClendon lay-up early in the second quarter.  But several York turnovers followed, which allowed Hunter to get back in the game.  A three-pointer by the Hawks Ashley Yu put her team on top, 29-27, with just over five minutes left in the half.

The game continued to stay close for most of the third quarter, until Hunter closed the period with six straight points, which was once again capped by a Yu three-pointer, making the score 59-46 going into the fourth quarter.  In the fourth, Hunter pushed the lead to as much as 22 and cruised down the stretch to the victory.

Yu led the Hawks with 18 points, while Jade Aponte scored 11 points.  They improve to 6-7, 3-3 CUNYAC.

York drops to 2-11, 1-5 CUNYAC.  They return to action on Monday night with a road contest at the College of New Rochelle. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
