JAMAICA, N.Y.—York College senior
Angelika Ruggiano scored her 1,000th career point, but the Cardinals women's basketball team fell to Baruch College at home, 72-44, Wednesday night.
Ruggiano needed just two points to reach 1,000 coming into the game and got it over early, hitting a running jumper in the lane with five minutes left in the first quarter. She becomes the eighth York player to reach the milestone and the first since Maimouna Dabo achieved the feat during the 2011 season.
Other than Ruggiano's achievement, there wasn't much else to celebrate for the Cardinals in this one. Baruch led for most of the way, and pulled away after a close first quarter.
The Bearcats opened up a big lead in the second quarter with an 11-3 run that extended their advantage to 18 points. Two three-pointers by Veronica Ganzi and another by Kristen Podlovits sparked the run.
York cut the deficit down to 11 points in the third quarter thanks to a 7-1 run, but another big stretch by Baruch in the fourth quarter quelled any thoughts of a York comeback.
Baruch got a big night from Veronica Ganzi, who scored 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting. She also connected on six shots from three-point range. Baruch had three other players reach double figures, with Shannon Barrett recording a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds).
York's
Jigcara Grant—the nation's leading rebounder—pulled down 23 more boards tonight, to add to her lead.
Samantha Bond finished with 19 points, while Ruggiano recorded 13 points.
Baruch improves to 8-9, 7-3 CUNYAC, while York drops to 4-15, 2-9 CUNYAC. The Cardinals will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Brooklyn College at 5 p.m.
